Ophiopogon is an excellent and useful plant, often know as 'Black Grass' even though this is really not a grass but a member of the lily family. The narrow, shiny black leaves are evergreen and form a carpet across the ground year-round. In early summer small lilac flowers appear, followed by lilac ovoid berries - both the flowers and fruit are not that prominent unless you look hard - the wonderful leaves are the main feature and I love to see this planted along the edges of pathways where it defines the front of a border on a beautiful way. Fully hardy.
