If you tend to like the biggest and the best, then this is the Pineapple Lily for you. Eucomis pole-evansii is a spectacular form flowering at an incredible 4-5ft high. The many fleshy, green leaves grow to around 3 ft long and are mildly rippled on the edges - there are no prominent markings. The flowers are pale cream with a pink or greenish centre and they are held on an extremely sturdy upright stem. The seedpods that follow are a fresh apple-green. The leafy top bract is somewhat smaller that the width of the raceme of flowers. This Eucomis is suited to a larger container or a sheltered border , maybe against a sunny wall or hedge. The huge bulbs readily form offsets although these remain firmly attached to the mother bulb and can only be removed with the sharpest of knives.
South African Collection.
PLANT IN SPRING
Eucomis originate in Southern Africa and are commonly known as 'Pineapple Lilies' due to the obvious resemblance of the flower head and its crown of leafy bracts. The display lasts from summer to late autumn which is exceptional for a bulb. They make excellent container plants and are lovely in the border. Water and feed well whilst in growth, but keep the soil dry in winter. Eucomis are surprisingly hardy provided they have a winter mulch and good drainage.
