Commonly known as 'Corn Lilies', Ixias are attractive cormous perennials that soon multiply to produce a colourful display in the summer garden. They need a sunny well-drained position to thrive. Plant the corms 5" deep in a warm place at the base of walls or under perennials to protect from winter frost - alternatively lift the corms in the autumn and astore in dry frost-free conditions.
Ixia 'Yellow Emperor' bears 2" soft-yellow flowers with deep-burgundy centres in summer.

PLANT IN SPRING
As a rule of thumb, bulbs should be planted in a hole, the depth of which is around 3 times the height of the bulb. We usually dig our planting holes a little deeper than this and then fill the base with some fine grit which helps with drainage directly under the bulb. Never plant at perfectly measured distances apart as this can look artificial – for smaller bulbs we plant in clumps of five to nine in a staggered group so that they look more natural when they flower.
